About Nose Jobs (Rhinoplasty)

Overview of the Procedure
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that restructures the nose, altering the shape and/or size. Rhinoplasty can be performed either for elective cosmetic reasons or to correct deformities by reshaping the nose cartilage and bone. The procedure may improve breathing and congestion.

Reasons for the Procedure
Rhinoplasty may be done to improve the appearance of the nose, or to correct breathing problems. Patients may wish to remove bumps, decrease the size of, or change the shape of the nose.

What to Expect
Rhinoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. The surgeon makes incisions to access the bone and cartilage, which is then reshaped to achieve the desired appearance. Small pieces of bone may be removed, cartilage reshaped, and fillers may be added. Once the structure has been corrected, the skin is redraped. Internal and external splints are applied to protect the new nose from damage.

Recovery
A splint will be applied to the nose after surgery, and should be removed by the doctor in approximately one week. Internal splints may also be used, but should be removed one week after the rhinoplasty procedure. You may experience swelling and/or bruising, which can be controlled by using ice packs and cold compresses, and fades within two weeks. Pain can be managed with medication. You will likely be able to return to normal activities within one or two weeks, but you should wait several weeks to perform more demanding tasks.
