About Scar Revision & Dermabrasion
Overview of the Procedure
Scar revision or dermabrasion is a procedure done to alter to appearance of scars, making them less visible. There are several types of scar revision, including excision, topical treatments (OBAGI/ Retin-A), and injectable treatments (JuveDerm, Sculptra, Radiesse and steroids). Dermabrasion evens out the top layer of skin, reducing the appearance of scars and other imperfections.
Reasons for the Procedure
Patients may be unhappy with the appearance of their scars, which include acne, injury, and surgical scars. Scar Revision or Dermabrasion can minimize the appearance of scars and even the skin.
What to Expect
With scar revision excision, the scar tissue is removed and the remaining skin pulled together. Topical treatment silicone gels may be applied. Bleaching agents (Solaquin) may lighten darker scars. With Dermabrasion, the top layer of skin is scraped away. Either local or general anesthesia or IV sedation may be used. The resulting appearance of scars depends on their severity.
Recovery
Your skin will appear red and swollen for a few days. After several weeks, your skin should start to appear normal. Pain medication may be necessary. The skin may scab over. You should follow instructions for how to care for your skin and avoid activities that could damage your face for several weeks. You should stay out of the sun for several months and use sun block.
